Hawaii Literacy empowers individuals with help from amazing staff and volunteers

Hawaii Literacy has a large impact on the community, especially the students and volunteers that participate in their programs!

Lyle Kaloi is a volunteer at Hawaii Literacy and says it’s amazing what Hawaii Literacy is doing for the community. As a former social worker, Lyle’s passion was always helping families and children. Seeing how Hawaii Literacy impacts transitional homes, homeless sights, and community events made Lyle want to get involved. “People don’t understand that the most fundamental skill, such as reading or writing, what it can do for people. I like the program and I like the impact that it’s done for the children,” says Lyle.

Hawaii Literacy learner Rodney Beauchamp says he was given a second chance when he joined the program. He wasn’t able to read the bus lines, and therefore didn’t always make it to his end destination. “I used to be afraid to ask people for help,” says Rodney. He’s proud to say he’s come a long way after learning to read and write.

Jill Canfield, Executive Director of Hawaii Literacy, says many don’t understand that literacy is a gateway to many opportunities. Hawaii Literacy prioritizes spreading awareness of their programs and to make people understand what it means to have someone learn to read and write. Jill says she’s very grateful for the volunteers and staff that continue to work with her and Hawaii Literacy to help those in need.

Addressing the Gaps in Hawaii’s literacy landscape - HMSA's Island Scene

Many people may not realize that for a certain time in history, the Hawaiian Kingdom outpaced many nations, including the United States, in literacy rates. However, over the past century those rates have fallen, especially among Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander populations.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Dozens of Oahu families will now have greater access to educational programs thanks to a community grant.

Nareit Hawaii gifted $40,000 to support Hawaii Literacy’s effort to reach out to underserved Oahu families.

The money will go toward providing 150 Kalihi and Waipahu families with digital tablets and internet access to improve comprehension and reading skills.

“Literacy impacts every aspect of someone’s life. So to be able to have ways for families to connect and be equipped with digital skills as well to connect to resources, support families, help support their children’s education, we’re really excited about this project,” said Jill Takasaki Canfield, executive director of Hawaii Literacy.

“It was a great way to impact a lot of people with simple devices we all take for granted in our every day living,” said Gladys Marrone, executive director of Nareit Hawaii. “Every day without access they fall further and further behind, so this was a great opportunity and privilege to do that.”

The devices will be loaned out to families in Waipahu, Mayor Wright Homes, and the Towers at Kuhio Park for one year.

Mayor Blangiardi Proclaims September 8th Hawaii Literacy 50th Anniversary Day

Recognition bestowed on International Literacy Day

HONOLULU – September 8, 2021 – Mayor Rick Blangiardi proclaimed Wednesday, September 8, 2021 Hawaii Literacy 50th Anniversary Day. The proclamation comes as the organization celebrates its milestone anniversary of empowering Hawaii’s children and adults with essential reading, writing, and lifelong learning skills.

Hawaii Literacy 50th Anniversary Day recognizes that one in six adults in Hawaii struggle with reading and writing, and 50 percent of children from low-income communities can be up to two years behind their peers when entering first grade. The statistics underscore the impacts that low literacy rates have on adverse health outcomes and increased poverty rates in underserved communities.

Since its founding in 1971, Hawaii Literacy has given adults the opportunity to learn to read and write through its Adult Literacy program which matches learners with trained tutors in one-to-one tutoring sessions. The organization’s Bookmobile program aims to close the youth literacy gap and helps children succeed in school by bringing books and literacy-related activities to underserved communities on Oahu and Hawaii Island.

“We are so grateful to Mayor Blangiardi for recognizing the essential role that literacy plays in our everyday lives,” said Jill Takasaki Canfield, executive director of Hawaii Literacy. “As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, we hope to reach even more adults and children with our programs so that the lack of literacy is no longer a barrier to better jobs, finishing school or enjoying a book together as a family.”
